OLD LOVES AND OLDER PARTNERS

‘Good evening, Alex,’ Emilia Wintergreen replied guardedly. ‘I understand you’ve been looking for me.’

‘Well, I wouldn't say we’ve been looking for you,’ Monroe forced a smile. ‘I just shouted your name out loudly and knew one of your spy drones would hear it.’

‘Are we really going to do that right now?’ Wintergreen’s voice was tight.

Monroe sighed at the question.

‘No, it’s fine,’ he admitted. ‘Thank you for coming, Emilia. We were looking to speak to you, as we have some questions.’

‘I would have preferred to do it elsewhere,’ Wintergreen clutched at her arm as she looked around, and Declan couldn’t help but wonder if old memories were returning. ‘My offices, perhaps?’

‘I’m sorry, but that wouldn’t be possible,’ Monroe’s voice was also tight and emotionless as he spoke. ‘Would you come with us to the interview room, please?’

‘You’re interviewing me? Officially?’

Monroe clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, and Declan realised how hard this was for him.

‘Yes,’ Declan quickly interjected, mainly to help Monroe. ‘You see, one of the problems we have is we now find ourselves with two dead bodies. One long dead one, and another that’s recently dead.’

He took a deep breath. He’d dealt with Wintergreen before, and he knew how dangerous she could be, even when she was on the same side.

‘And the other problem we find ourselves with is that we also have a witness description of you, seen at the scene last night, before the body was discovered.’

Wintergreen was silent for a moment, mulling the comment over.

‘I can see that being a problem,’ she nodded. ‘Do you want to know my whereabouts?’

‘Aye, it would help if we knew where you were last night,’ Monroe agreed.

‘That’s classified.’

‘Of course it is,’ Monroe sighed. ‘Okay, let’s try this a different way. Where were you between the hours of three am and six am this morning?’

‘That’s classified.’

‘You’re not really helping yourself here, Emilia,’ Monroe, tired of the game, snapped. ‘You might be a big thing in Whitehall, but in here, you’re just another suspect. An ex-copper who left her role.’

‘I get that, and I also get why you aren’t likely to trust anything I say,’ Wintergreen softened a little as she replied. ‘But I’m hoping the fact that Trix, and also Tom, speak highly of me—’

‘Last I heard, you burnt Tom and kicked him out of MI5, and Trix was on suspension,’ Billy, unable to hold his tongue, interrupted.

Wintergreen watched him for a moment, as if the irritation at being interrupted had turned into amusement on who’d done it.

‘That’s due to their own actions and nothing to do with me,’ she argued. ‘But I’ll answer your question. There was a drone strike in Ukraine this morning at oh-five hundred hours. I had agents on the ground, and I was in a meeting, making sure they were safe at the time.’

She shifted her stance, still defensive.

‘I was nowhere near the Morpeth Arms at the times you mentioned.’

‘And how would you know we were looking at the
